Recently I saw Kidnap starring Halle Berry courtesy of Hulu (thank you Hulu). The film is about a waitress, Karla whose son is abducted from the park and she spends the entire day chasing after the child abductors to get him back.
As a mother, my emotions were all over the place. I hold my son extra tight after watching this movie. This was an incredible thrill ride and one of Halle's best films to date. Yes, her BEST! She poured her heart and soul into this role and I felt every emotion known to man while watching Karla chase after her son. In the beginning I was mad because I wanted to know why the boy named Frankie, even went along with a stranger. Then I had to stop and think, well does my son know not to walk off with a stranger? I think we need to have another discussion about that.
I cheered when Karla made progress and I screamed when she had a set back...it was too much to take in but in the end I found myself cheering and relieved.
The film was nominated for a NAACP Image Award for Best Actress and Halle won. Although well deserved, she and the movie should have been nominated for more awards. Aside from being snubbed during award season, I find myself envisioning Halle as a superhero. After the incredible success of "Black Panther", anything is possible. We all remember "Catwoman" but Halle is better than that.
I give the movie 5 stars, 2 thumbs up and a standing ovation. If you haven't seen it yet, watch it. It is a thrill ride that will leave you emotional whether you have kids or not.
